As I pealed back the cover, with the highest of expectations, I found something unwelcomely soft. Fifteen years into the journey, they seem to have settled into a gentle gallop. The guitars were largely left at the stable, as the bouncing mane glistens in a reverb, dub kissed fog. Kazu Makino's lovely vocals are lush, understated and ethereal, as she seems to be in control of "Penny Sparkle", the album's namesake horse. Though well worth getting to know, I'd buy a copy of "Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons" or "23" instead. Nearly Recommended. 1 2 3 4 6 9

Formed in the early 70s members included Eddie Green (keyboards, vocals), Sherman Ferguson (drums, percussion, marimba), Odean Pope (sax, flute, oboe), and Al Johnson / Tyron Brown (bass). In all, they released four albums for Cobblestone and its successor Muse before disbanding in 1976. Each album had its own vibe. Available for the first time this century thanks to Porter Records – and they really come to life in the warmth of the analog format. Highly Recommended.

Student-run and operated since 1960, WDCE has been the voice of independent radio in Richmond. WDCE is affiliated with and located at University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia.

Students have used it as a launching pad to careers in radio or other mass communications as well as a fun extra-curricular activity. Non-students have also played an important role in broadcasting continuity and diversity.

Over the years, WDCE has brought many concerts to the campus including DC punk legends Fugazi, indie favorites Death Cab For Cutie, and hip-hop veteran Masta Ace.

WDCE was located in the Tyler Haynes Commons since its first broadcast, but was recently relocated and renovated to the North Court basement.

Alumni and former DJ's are encouraged to drop us a line on Facebook to reminisce about the good times they had at WDCE, so interested students and new DJ's can hear how great it can be to be involved with college radio!

Spring/Summer

As we approach the end of the school year, now is an excellent time for people interested to get involved. Students that live or will be staying locally may have an opportunity to try new or different time slots. Non-Students may also get a chance to experiment with different styles of music or fill-in for a student DJ.

The synths, snappy rhythms and sterilized chorus driven vocals have more sheen than a body-oiled beauty. Thankfully the sun drenched sand adds some saving grit. Good.

On Sunday November 2, 2008 WDCE began broadcasting from our new studio located in the basement of North Court.

Behind the heavy, steel, soundproof doors awaits a musical wonderland… an amazing new studio, DJ lounge, extensive library shelving and management office. The DJ lounge has been equipped to double as a live performance space with three feeds connected directly to our broadcast board.

The studio is fully outfitted with multiple computers, CD players, turntables, mixer, massive digital library and more. There are also several inputs to allow our DJs to easily connect their personal laptops and music players into the broadcast board. The three microphone setup and U-shaped console makes guests feel welcome.

WDCE studio construction (summer 2008)

Over the summer of 2008 a new studio was constructed for WDCE.

It is located in basement of what’s now known as North Court. Located on the south side of Westhampton Lake, across from the Greek Theater, the building was built in 1913. At the time, it served as the entire Westhampton College for women.

WDCE and the Collegian (URs student newspaper) vacated Tyler Haynes Commons to make room for Career Development offices and expanded meeting / flex space. Though it’s sad to say goodbye to the Commons, our home since the 1970’s, it’s exciting to welcome a new chapter in WDCE history.

The transformation of the space was quite a challenge.

· After environmental and structural issues were addressed, demolition of brick and block walls began to open the space.

· Numerous pipes and wires had to be relocated.
· The concrete ceiling had to be repaired and the floor re-pored.
· New mechanicals, electrical and communications systems were installed.

· The space was then built-out to include an entirely new broadcast booth, office, lounge/performance space and efficient library arrangement.

The Dismemberment Plan at the Black Cat: AWESOME The Dismemberment Plan at The Black Cat cooked my goose, so it was tender and with orange sauce and only 10 dollars. I (dave of the Music For Driving El Camino's Dangerously show) went to see The dismemberment plan in DC with katie (of the success! show), and so i was written, and so it was well. El Guapo, or the handsome man, played, and it was mostly stuff od their new album on dischord, "fake french", which subsequentiallyactuallyFYI i reviewed for the station (wdce) and i thought it was cool. They had some loud ass beat machines and it was like crazy dance music with all three of the guys being like "Wo, you knew know" and stuff to each other- and the drummer kept dancing and dropping shit everywhere and he was staring weird places and looked kinda like just some regular guy, so i bet you he prolly just gets freaked out late at night and like has these weird rituals like i do, so i liked them. they didnt play for long tho. But the dismemberment plan....sheeeeeut. they played for a real long time, but im getting ahead of myself ive never seen the D plan play, although i had my past oppurtunites, alley katz, macrock, and im pretty new to the DC/RVA scene, because im originally from the suburbs in pennsylvania and i really only ventured to Philly to sit around pretending i was good at skating at LOVE park, and to go to see the bouncing souls and kid dynamite play, and like i went to see ska bands cuz that was me dude, but i never wore no fucking tie to a ska band show (like the kid at this show who katie and her friend were like " hes wearing a tie, jesus, isnt that like ska band at the 930 club?"- theyre so edgy and on the edge and critical, theyre nuts, leave that kid alone, hes just like...a kid dude. they all loved reel big fish back in the day and prolly sent emails to the aaron guy from RBF saying "youu guys are not sell outs like eeryone says, you guys are really awesome") anyway, they rocked and took a ton of requests and were really funny and endearing and the vibe was so cool and all community and great, in part becuase it was a fort reno benefit show (www.fortreno.com) and that made it all awesome too. And their music is awesome and great and theyre really cool. SO now i love them, although now theyre kinda broken up, but im no hanger-on to the past making myself try to relive stuff, and im glad i saw the end of an era, kinda, and it was a really awesome show. and they played at wdce a long time ago, before i went to school here. so, if you wanna hear some D plan, call up (804) 289-8790 and say "Yo pancake, play some muthafucking Dplan before i bring a grill to your house and say 'hop on' cuz you know ill frryyyy you". And if you want to listen to my show- its on monday nights from 11-1am, and im usually on during the day around 1 pm too. From today's Washington Post: "...An older song put everything in focus, though. From Here on In

South's debut record, From Here on In, seems to effortlessly blend traditional indie rock sounding guitar work and vocals with lush electronic backdrops to create a sound which is haunting while at the same time accessible. Packed with two new songs and a sound which is as unique as it is classic, this new US release is sure to bring the UK band the success they well deserve. While at times reminescent of older Oasis material, they manage to lace the traditional four piece set with soaring electronic sounds which sound perfectly natural and integrated. While many rock bands attempt to bring in electronic sounds which end up sounding forced, South's beautiful electronic harmonies and beats perfectly complement the equally rough and soft vocal melodies and acoustics. The album opens up with the mesmerizing Broken Head I which fades in and out of simple guitar and vocals to the lush electronic backdrops which give South their unique sound. Other notables are the catchy Paint the Silence and the folky, blues twinged I Know What You're Like. There are even some straight electronic songs like the trippy All in for Nothing (Reprise) and to balance that, some basic acoustic songs like the beautiful title track, Here on In. Regardless of whether you prefer basic indie rock or electronic work, there's something that everyone can enjoy in South's new record.

Don't Worry About Me

When Joey Ramone succumbed to cancer last year, rock music lost a quiet legend. You might not know that now, but you'll only see more of Joey and Ramones' influence as years go by. While "Don't Worry About Me" is clearly a solo effort with Joey writing all but 2 songs, both covers, it doesn't seem to far from the later Ramones records that came out in the 90s. With lines like: "Sitting in a hospital bed, frustration going through my head, turn off the TV set to take some drugs so I can forget", you can't miss where this album's lifeforce comes from. Even while bed-ridden , Joey was still able to write songs with new inspirations. Case in point, his ode to cable channel CNBC's financial analyst, "Maria Bartiromo". Joey knew that this would be his final influence on rock, and he put all his strength into making it a good one. It's not a sentimental farewell or a hokey send-off, just a solid passionate rock record, a Ramones staple. While the album can get pretty depressing at points, most notably during "I Got Knocked Down (But I'll Get Up)", the album leaves the listener with a newfound appreciation for life with the optimistic title track "Don't Worry About Me". We won't worry about you Joey, but we sure will miss you.
