Music Tapes: ...For Clouds and Tornadoes (Merge) - Though the Music Tapes are generally considered a spin-off from the Elephant 6 music collective, the project actually predates it. The brainchild of then 16-year-old Julian Koster, it fueled Chocolate USA, which eventually evolved into the Elephant 6 projects like Neutral Milk Hotel. Revived by the multi-instrumentalist in 1995, the project explores the possibilities of a variety of antique instruments, captured on vintage recording equipment. Features the singing saw choir, various raw strings, handheld percussion and 7-foot metronome. Interesting stuff.
